As the reigning winner of the
PGA Tour, Rocket Classic, South Africa’s Aldrich Potgieter will hope to make history by becoming the first golfer to win back-to-back titles in Detroit.
Raised in Mossel bay, a coastline town in South Africa’s Garden Route, Potgieter turned professional in 2023 following a successful amateur career where he claimed the 2020 South Australian Junior Masters title, which was followed by a win at the 2021 Western Australian Amateur tournament.
It was in 2022 where Potgieter made a name for himself on the amateur golf scene, after bagging success at the Nomads South African Juniors International, Nomads SA Boys U19 Championship, Western Province Amateur and The Amateur Championship.
Potgieter also took home the African Amateur Stroke Play Championship, Junior Invitational at Sage Valley and Georgia Cup trophies shortly before turning pro.
Now 21, Potgieter will head into the tournament with two wins to his name as a professional, namely as the 2025 Rocket Classic winner, after completing a playoff victory over Max Greyserman and Chris Kirk with a winning score of -22 on 29 June, 2025.
Potgieter’s only other win as a pro came at the Bahamas Great Abaco Classic in January 2024, where he won by a -10 score, two strokes ahead of Quade Cummins.
The former rugby player also featured at the Masters, PGA Championship, US Open and the Open Championship during the last three years, with his most successful showing during this period being a T35 placing at the 2026 PGA Championship.
