Novak Djokovic, no stranger to world sports all-around, will be gunning for his ninth Wimbledon crown this year as the 39-year-old hopes to fend off much younger opponents on the grass court.
Widely regarded as one of the greatest tennis players of all-time, Djokovic boasts the record of having the most Grand Slam titles in history with 24 to his name so far, leading names such as Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.
Coming into the tournament as the eighth-ranked player in the world, the Serbian’s historic run in the sport saw him accumulate 101 career titles, 10 of which came at the Australian Open.
With seven Wimbledon honours, Djokovic is looking to tie Federer’s record on eight crowns this year while he holds four US Open trophies and three French Open titles.
In what appeared to be a changing of the guard, Djokovic suffered back-to-back final defeats against Carlos Alcaraz at Wimbledon in 2023 and 2024.
Djokovic recently competed at Roland Garros in May, where he suffered a third round loss against Joao Fonseca with a score of 6-4, 6-4, 3-6, 5-7, 5-7.
Reflecting on his chances at Wimbledon, Djokovic expressed that he is reveling in the opportunity of playing on the softer grass court, which requires less athleticism compared to that of the clay at Roland Garros.
"Yeah it's good,” he said.
“I am looking forward to it. I am looking forward to the grass, not as much running required as on clay”.
