As a team that divided opinions on all fronts this season, Arsenal’s run toward their first UEFA Champions League final since 2006 was built on solid foundations set during an impressive run in the league phase of the tournament this season.
The Gunners commenced their Champions League campaign at San Mames on Tuesday, 16 September, where they recorded a 2-0 win over Athletic Bilbao owing to late goals by Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard.
Their win over Bilbao set the precedent for an eight-match winning streak, making them the first side in the tournament’s history to finish the new league format with an unblemished record.
Arsenal’s first real test of the league stage came against Atletico Madrid on 21 October, a team they would meet later in the showpiece. As perhaps their first signal of being a top contender for the Big Ears, the London giants put on a goal laden second-half performance where they raced towards a 4-0 win at the Emirates Stadium.
With Gabriel Magalhaes, Gabriel Martinelli and Viktor Gyokeres (2) getting their names on the scoresheet in the tie, Arsenal raced toward the top of the pile early on.

Regarding other notable victories, Arsenal then secured a 3-1 victory over Bayern Munich at home on Wednesday, 26 November where Noni Madueke and Martinelli’s second-half efforts sealed the deal.
The Gunners also included an impressive 3-1 win against Inter Milan in their body of work, as Gabriel Jesus (2) and Gyokeres downed the eventual Serie A champions at the iconic San Siro Stadium to book their place in the knockout rounds.
