With the current T20 Series between New Zealand and South Africa tied at 1-1, the two popular cricketing nations will battle once more in the third fixture at Eden Park on Friday.

South Africa won the toss ahead of their second test at Seddon Park in Hamilton and elected to bowl as Devon Conway powered his way to 60 from 49 balls before Wiaan Mulder took him out in the 15th over. Tom Latham opened alongside Conway but managed only 11 runs from 10 balls before Keshav Maharaj dismissed him in the sixth over.

Josh Clarkson’s 26 from nine balls ultimately helped New Zealand get over the line, while Maharaj gave away 24 runs in the final over as the Black Caps ended the innings with a score of 175/6.

South Africa were bowled out for 107 in 15.5 overs as George Linde ended up as South Africa’s highest scorer with 33 from 12 balls, while Rubin Hermann recorded 19 from 12.

Adding to their woes, the Proteas were down 31/2 during the powerplay as they battled at the crease. Connor Esterhuizen was first to go, managing only eight from 12 balls in the fourth over. Opening batsman Wiaan Mulder was next to go, falling to Mitchel Satner with 16 from 20 balls in the following over.

Nonetheless, it all crumbled for South Africa in the 13th over, as Lockie Ferguson dismissed both Maharaj and Nqobani Mokoena before Linde was sent packing in the 15th over.

Reflecting on South Africa’s loss and particularly New Zealand’s batting, Proteas batting coach Ashwell Prince believes that his side was under immense pressure at the wicket.

“They (New Zealand) played really well in that last over, which gave their innings a really strong finish, taking them up to 175,” Prince said.

“Which was always going to be hard to get on that surface.”
